Optimizing Landfill Operations with Drones and GIS Technology

April 30, 2025

SCS Engineers has been integrating advanced drone technology into its landfill operations to improve site management, enhance safety, and optimize environmental monitoring. Drones are now being used for a variety of applications, including aerial 3D mapping, landfill gas monitoring (specifically methane and hydrogen sulfide), thermal imaging, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data management. These technologies provide real-time data, improve operational efficiency, and support better decision-making.

During this mini-tech presentation, SCS Engineers showcased how drone technology is being utilized at landfills to map site topography, monitor gas emissions, conduct thermal surveys, and integrate aerial data into GIS systems. These applications not only enhance environmental compliance but also provide a safer, more cost-effective approach to landfill management.

The session included a presentation on the various types of drone technology being utilized, followed by a live demonstration showcasing their use in monitoring methane emissions across landfill operations.
